THE DECLINE OF NEATNESS, A STEP TO ENVIRONMENTAL HARM.
Neatness in our world today, is at its lowest level while indecency is at its peak in all sectors. Men and women, young and old alike go about portraying themselves in a manner that is unacceptable, because of our desensitized minds, these actions has become acceptable. Many have loss the appetite of decent appearance, the notion of normal dress code has vaporized from the minds of many. Apparently, clothing companies in the like of banana republic, et al, go for higher profit by competing with one another to offer clothing that look worn out, out dated and tattered. Young men and women, not excluding the older ones, have engaged in such shabby and improper appearance. It has been observed that most young boys now, slack their pants while working around. Evidently, summer season is the season where decency really appears to be absurd. People walk around the street half naked, young girls put one clothing that before they even bend down, one can see their under wears. No one really say something because we all are involved in it in one way or the other. Based on Norman Cousins’ article on Decline of Neatness,
“Nothing is wrong with comfortable clothing. It is just that current usage is more reflective of a slavish conformity than a desire for ease.”
What we wear, have much to say about who we are. Vocabulary today, is almost between the devil and the deep blue sea. Incomplete and incorrect sentences are more likely to be used than complete sentences. Text messaging and emailing have even make chopped-up English more favorable. Letter writing has long been extinct. No one actually sit down to write a good and correct letter. Incomplete words have taken over. For example, word like “LOL” is used to represent “laughing out loud”, “gash you” is used to represent “Ok I understand”. Consequently, vulgarism and profanity are as common as bottles of soda found in every store. Expletive is not scarce in our day-to-day conversation and show. Norman Cousins also noted that
“Some screenwriters openly admit that they are careful not to turn in scripts that are devoid of foul language lest the classification office impose the G (general) rating.
Our daily lives have gotten a share of this dilapidation. We fill less sympathetic about the human value and life. TV shows are more of violence and immoral actions. The “American Dad” show which is made or intended for Kids is void of moral values in the sense that it only portrays a man that lie, kill, and engage in corruption and many other lewd attitudes. Every one of these things now are linked to the degradation of our lives in that the way we appear talk about what we are and what we do, talk about how we live. This untidiness in appearance, words and fillings, have contributed to a decline in neatness in our environment also. The dirtiness of our attitude has caused us to overlook our mother earth by not recycling. It has blinded our mind to the need and care of the earth. The Earth is crying out for a halt in our unfavorable action, for an end to all our hurt and wound to her. Therefore, because of these improper actions, we are to examine ourselves, heed to the cry of mother earth and start recycling because recycling can save our environment by reducing the amount of toxic waste we deposit in the earth, protect our health as human, and conserve our natural resources

Ebuka, you made some very interesting points. I agree, we do take a part in "The Decline of Neatness" by acting as if it's okay and it's not that serious. When in fact it really is. I love the statement you made when you said "Vocabulary today, is almost between the devil and the deep blue sea". Yes, the way we talk as a people is out of this world. The kids as well as adults have no respect for themselves, their parents or even their elders. As I sat in front of my house today and two young girls were walking up the street. Talking loud and using vulgar language. I felt sorry for my elderly neighbor who had to sit on her porch where she has been living all of myself life and plus had to sit and listen to kids young enough to be her great, great grand kids using profanity and talking like they just crawled out of a gutter.

Ebuka,
The fact that you have used "American Dad" as an example for the decline of neatness in our country at our moment is absolutely brilliant. Not only is it a wonderful example that most readers can relate to, but the simple fact that it's a direct satire of the "far right" as well as a part of the problematic aspects of the society that the show itself is poking fun at, you really latched onto an element of TV that makes it that much more valuable to just grab a book. For cheap laughs, a person could always flip on Comedy Central or Fox and drift away into the filth that's being fed to them, and many parents seem to rely on that as a substitute baby sitter these days. Which brings us into yet another part of declining society - instant gratification. Busy parents want a few hours of their own, so they toss the kids in front of the TV and then wonder why they're ADHD and failing school. Kids don't want to bother with a chore like reading or playing outside, so they hop in front of the TV, and then wonder why their parents are nagging them about grades and obesity.

An interesting direction that you could go with in your paper while bringing up cartoons and a thesis regarding toxic waste would be a quick tie in between another American favorite such as The Simpsons. There is plenty of social commentary on that show regarding toxic waste from the hero in Bart's comics to Lisa's environmentalist ways.

According to Ebuka, she stated that "what we wear, have much to say about who we are," which is very much true. It reflects how we present ourselves to society. We humans should not be acting in matters that are very negative to ourselves and the planet we live in. Humans need to communicate and act in matters that are positive to everything we do. The examples that Ebuka used were very good examples that indicate society today. The media also have a part of blame because it contributes to how society lives today. Media shows all the negative side of things, it should be able to educate people in how we can contribute in improving mother earth. The planet earth should be a place of harmony, peace, and love.

Ebuka,
I applaud you for your words and intricate vocabulary. The way you describe the so called “American Way” is astounding. Not to say that everyone acts this way, its just that so many of us do and then wonder why we aren’t going anywhere in life. The way we dress and how we speak plays a huge role on the way people view us and how we view earth. You were completely right when you said that summer is the season when all decency appears to be just absurd. People were wearing Daisy Dukes a long time ago, but they weren’t acting and speaking the way girls today to. They had class and that class made up for the lack of clothing. Despite the fact that all people walk and talk amongst others, it does appear as though the younger generation has absolutely no respect for those around them. If they did, they’re lack of dignity and sloppiness of dress would decline immensely.

In response to the brilliant introduction of Ebuka Mbanuade, one can only say bravo. Bravo for recongnizing that we as human beings have a responsibility to clean up the earth by recylcling, as well as cleaning up our lives. Your overall point of view about today's society and the connection between the way we dress, speak, and act was refreshing and on point. When you wrote, "nothing is wrong with comfortable clothing. It is just that current usage is more reflective of a slavish conformity than a desire for ease" I was absolutely blown away by its reflective truth.

You are absolutely right Ebuka "What we wear, have much to say about who we are".As summer temperature rises, standards of modesty seem to fall,we live in a age that glorifies immodesty and immorality,it has become so commonly accepted that most people dont get bother about what they wear, people expose themselve wearing tight and revealing cloths all in the sake of "hot temperature".According to Author of "The Decline of Neatness" ( Cousins 78) "Nothing is wrong with comfortable clothing, its just that current usage is more reflective of slavish conformity". Manner it seems, are not what it use to be,not more than one in three Americans says "PLEASE" or" THANK YOU" and words like "FUCK YOU and BITCH" are commonly used mosltly among kids today, to an extent bad manner and behaviour have worsened, bad example on television and movies are broadly cited and inadequate parenting. Decline of neatness is a major issue we face in our society,it affects us in all aspect of our lives. We can help make a difference in our society !
