About Me:
Founded by the organizers of the first Earth Day in 1970, Earth Day Network (EDN) promotes environmental citizenship and year round progressive action worldwide.

Earth Day Network is a driving force steering environmental awareness around the world. Through Earth Day Network, activists connect, interact, and have an impact on their communities, and create positive change in local, national, and global policies. EDN's international network reaches over 17,000 organizations in 174 countries, while the domestic program engages 5,000 groups and over 25,000 educators coordinating millions of community development and environmental protection activities throughout the year. Earth Day is the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities. More than a half billion people participate in our campaigns every year.

Our mission is to grow and diversify the environmental movement worldwide, and to mobilize it as the most effective vehicle for promoting a healthy, sustainable planet. We pursue our mission through education, politics, events, and consumer activism.

The First LEED Certified Golf Course in the U.S.

This course, named Mirimichi Golf Course, is the only U.S project to receive the Audubon International’s Classic Sanctuary certification. Unlike the conventional courses, this specific institution will feature irrigation systems to maximize the use of rainwater, native landscaping, and electric golf carts powered by solar panels in order to reduce… Continue

Climate Change: Preying on the World’s Most Vulnerable

On July 23, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing to examine the challenges of curbing climate change in developing nations. It is well-understood that the effects of climate change can be devastating, increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters, more droughts in newer areas or areas that are already water-stressed, destruction of wildlife habitats (especially in the ocean), among other issues.
But while developed countries, as the largest consumers and emitters, are at t… Continue

Climate Change: A National Security Threat

The debate about climate change is no longer one solely focused on the polar bears and melting glaciers; the concern is now security—National Security. On July 21st, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a hearing that discussed Climate Change and Global Security. With testimony from former Senator John W. Warner, retired Vice Admirals Lee F. Gunn and Dennis McGinn, and Vice President of Center for New American Security Sharon Burke, the general feeling in the air was that climate change p… Continue

The White House is going on an “Energy Diet”

The Chief Administrative Officer’s staff has, over the past eighteen months, been taking steps to make the Capitol building and its surrounding congressional office buildings more energy-efficient and environment friendly. The “Green the Capitol” program has and continues to effectively research the Capitol’s environmental impact to find out how the institution, as a whole, can become more environmentally responsible.

To enumerate a few of the many successes of the “Green the Capitol” program,… Continue

I think the administration should purge this site of those people who are sending messages like below and who use their profile solely to link to their sales sites. I estimate that there could be at least 100 members like this who have recently joined. This one below mails everyone and this does not seem very wholesome and children freindly to me.

This virtual Iterei celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity holds hands with our final efforts to save this brazilian HOT SPOT at ATLANTIC COASTAL RANGE CLOUDED RAINFOREST PEAKS and its network of sparkling pure water streams. NO TO FRAGMENTATION of these fauna HABITATS and Sao Lourencinho Mountains .... MORE RESOURCE-EFFICIENT ALTERNATIVE IS REQUIRED to enlarge the Mercosur Highway

The theme for the International Day on Biological Diversity (IDB) in 2009 is invasive alien species (IAS) - one of the greatest threats to biodiversity, and to the ecological and economic well-being of society and the planet.

Designation of IDB 2009 on the theme of invasive alien species provides Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and those dealing with IAS, opportunity to raise awareness of the issue and increase practical action to tackle the problem.
What are Invasive Alien Species?
Invasive alien species are plants, animals, pathogens and other organisms that are non-native to an ecosystem, and which may cause economic or environmental harm or adversely affect human health. In particular, they impact adversely upon biodiversity, including decline or elimination of native species - through competition, predation, or transmission of pathogens - and the disruption of local ecosystems and ecosystem functions.

Invasive alien species, introduced and/or spread outside their natural habitats, have affected native biodiversity in almost every ecosystem type on earth and are one of the greatest threats to biodiversity. Since the 17th century, invasive alien species have contributed to nearly 40% of all animal extinctions for which the cause is known (CBD, 2006).

The problem continues to grow at great socio-economic, health and ecological cost around the world. Invasive alien species exacerbate poverty and threaten development through their impact on agriculture, forestry, fisheries and natural systems, which are an important basis of peoples’ livelihoods in developing countries. This damage is aggravated by climate change, pollution, habitat loss and human-induced disturbance.
Causes and impacts of invasive alien species
Globalization has resulted in greater trade, transport, travel and tourism, all of which can facilitate the introduction and spread of species that are not native to an area. If a new habitat is similar enough to a species’ native habitat, it may survive and reproduce. For a species to become invasive, it must successfully out-compete native organisms for food and habitat, spread through its new environment, increase its population and harm ecosystems in its introduced range.

Most countries are grappling with complex and costly invasive species problems. For example, the annual environmental losses caused by introduced pests in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, India and Brazil have been calculated at over US$ 100 billion (CBD, 2006). Addressing the problem of invasive alien species is urgent because the threat is growing daily, and the economic and environmental impacts are severe.

Earth Day Network/EDN, Hello, I'm happy to be part of this network as I believe it's one of the really important Networks to work within. I would like to learn more about the EDN. Is there an area here that talks about the history and who the creators of EDN are? I know you have the other website www.earthday.net which has more information, so there may be no reason to duplicate information here.

I think what would be more useful is to know which individuals in EDN have taken responsibility for organizing the community here and moderating it? Is there one person who IS EDN here? Or are there a couple or a few people who take turns posting as EDN? If so, shouldn't they each have their own ID here or DO THEY already? I've been in many Ning groups, but I've never been in one where the founder of the group was not identifiable as a real person. I think it would be to your great advantage to identify yourself as a human being, so we all can relate to you better and get to know you personally. Is there any good reason not to do that? I think it's also helpful to identify who the administrators and/or moderators of the group are. Maybe you could poll the membership on this issue if you're not sure. One reason to identify people specifically is so that there are people identified who are assuming responsibility for the community and who can be approached with ideas, problems, or issues. I look forward to your response on this.
