PRAISE SONG FOR THE DAY
By Elizabeth Alexamder

The Inauguration Day Poem
January 20th 2009
Washington, DC

Each day we go about our business,
walking past each other, catching each other’s
eyes or not, about to speak or speaking.

All about us is noise. All about us is
noise and bramble, thorn and din, each
one of our ancestors on our tongues.

Someone is stitching up a hem, darning
a hole in a uniform, patching a tire,
repairing the things in need of repair.

Someone is trying to make music somewhere,
with a pair of wooden spoons on an oil drum,
with cello, boom box, harmonica, voice.

A woman and her son wait for the bus.
A farmer considers the changing sky.
A teacher says, Take out your pencils. Begin.

We encounter each other in words, words
spiny or smooth, whispered or declaimed,
words to consider, reconsider.

We cross dirt roads and highways that mark
the will of some one and then others, who said
I need to see what’s on the other side.

I know there’s something better down the road.
We need to find a place where we are safe.
We walk into that which we cannot yet see.

Say it plain: that many have died for this day.
Sing the names of the dead who brought us here,
who laid the train tracks, raised the bridges,

picked the cotton and the lettuce, built
brick by brick the glittering edifices
they would then keep clean and work inside of.

Praise song for struggle, praise song for the day.
Praise song for every hand-lettered sign,
the figuring-it-out at kitchen tables.

Some live by love thy neighbor as thyself,
others by first do no harm or take no more
than you need. What if the mightiest word is love?

Love beyond marital, filial, national,
love that casts a widening pool of light,
love with no need to pre-empt grievance.

In today’s sharp sparkle, this winter air,
any thing can be made, any sentence begun.
On the brink, on the brim, on the cusp,

praise song for walking forward in that light.

Reflections.
"Disheveled is in fashion, neatness is obsolete." The sloppiness virus has spread to all sectors of society(Cousin 1). Oh!! What a decline of neatness in our society. Now it is time for change not a change for bad but a change for better. Changing is the only constant thing in the Universe. The 21st Centuary generation needs to learn about how to preserve this planet earth of ours. Who is going to teach this computer geek's about responsibility. It is the duty of the older generation to teach the younger generation. We all need to remember that there is only one earth so we must take care of it.

Change is about your life, your objectives, and your decisions (Time for Change). Polluting the air, by machines and verbally are decisions everyone can choose not to do. All of us can help reduce resources being destroyed in other countries, by stopping the buying of useless things that we already have, recycle, and preventing pollution. The Earth will not be saved in a day, but by taking these actions it will definitely improve our chances of having a clean place.

Change for Her/Mother Earth!

There is one and only one Mother Earth.
She is the Queen of humans;
She provides us the beauty of nature, the greenish of trees, the singing of birds.
She gives us her arms to protect us from any danger.
But what do we do in response?
We create wars, our hearts and minds are full of hate, ego and envy,
And that don't let us see the reality.
Money and technology have trapped us,
And we forget about the nature of our Mother Earth.
The beauty of nature, the paradise is becoming a field of battles
With bombs that contaminate the air we breathe.
Let’s forget about our artificial life
And start thinking about the natural life that our Mother Earth offers us!
It is time to change our selfish behavior.
It is time to stop the decline of neatness,
And instead of contaminating our earth with bad influences and toxins;
We should contaminate others with a positive attitude,
And spread the disease of “naturities,” and “neatness” in the environment.

A seed within the soil
Recognizing a family to be filled with joy
Holding hands
Sharing morals
Is no longer contained within the soil
Pride and respect we are supposed to share
Respect for ourselves and the earth we no longer have
We break our souls
We break our morals
To be lost in the sea
Like underwater corals
But if we change the culture
And change it fast
We can rebuild a new earth
Strong and stead fast

Air pollution's a lot of gas
Droplets of acid or a mass
Of particles floating everywhere,
Stuff that messes up the air!

But, hey there, do you even care?
Are you ignorant or are you aware?
Are you prepared to do your part?
To fix this mess, where do we start?

Should we have to breathe the stuff
That cars and buses huff and puff
And smell the stink of diesel oil?
It makes my temper start to boil!

Do you want to ride a bike
Or, even better, take a hike
Cuz when you use your own two feet
To move yourself the air stays sweet

Remember that your car can pass
A bunch of smelly, poison gas
So if you're going not too far
Take a walk, don't drive the car.

Recycling
We need to work hard on different ways of recycling
It is important to separate glass from paper,
as it is plastic from tin.
Always recycle to the best of your ability
It is important not to go about wasting,
Thinking it wasn't that expensive anyway
instead we should be frugal.
Do our part.

Taking care of our environment should be our task
We should recycle in the hope of a cleaner tomorrow.
Recycling is important to natural environment
Recycling is important for tomorrow's generation
When you recycle you save energy as well as money
Recycling reduces pollution
Recycling also saves our natural resources
Do your part.

The "Decline of Neatness" is not just in our lives and our way of dressing as well as our way of talking as mentioned by Norman Cousins; but also in how we deal with our planet earth. It is devastating to see how each day the standards for a clean earth are fading. What happened to having clean oceans and water streams, green grass and our animals without being in danger of extinction? The “Time for Change” is now. Now is the time to take all measures into our hands. Not only to take care of our earth and prevent global warming, but to protect one another. According to “ Time for Change”, “As further effect of global warming, diseases like malaria are returning to areas where they been extinguished earlier” this shows that everything that we do always comes back to us. What we give the world that’s exactly what we are going to get back in return.

When were humans first put on Earth? Does anyone have an answer? As humans we come up with theories, but which one is the truth? We need food, clothing, and shelter, which all come from the Earth. The Earth is in a way attached to us, therefore if the Earth does not have inner peace then how can we? We cant. There are limited resources and we so far have done a great job of making them disappear in a second by cutting down trees to build-million dollar homes, which no one can afford in today's economy. At the same time we are expanding highways, which do not need improvement. We should be focused on making the economy better. Even though this makes more jobs avalaible, at the same time we are destroying the Earth.
According to the Time for Change, change is about your life, your objectives, and your decisions. Deciding to throw trash on the streets, polluting the air, by machines and verbally are decisions everyone can choose not to do. For many, the question is how? The answer is by taking part. If we change ourselves and the way we treat the world, the world will be a better place (Time for Change). All of us can help reduce resources being destroyed in other countries, by stopping the buying of useless things that we already have, recycle, and preventing pollution. The Earth will not be saved in a day, but by taking these actions it will definitely improve our chances of having a clean place.

The Power of We

If it is to be
It is up to we
To pull together
In our time of need
We have begun the chaos
Through polluting and littering
And let’s not forget the excessive spending
If change is to happen let it start let it start with us
So enough with the I and enough with the me
It is only possible
Through the power of we

The Decline of Neatness -Time For Change
The decisions that we make reflects on our well-being and the needs of the environment. Human’s needs are to be happy and satisfied with their lives. We don’t feel like worrying about the environment and what it needs. Our very existence hurts the environment. For example, we pollute the air with our fancy, gas sucker, killer cars. We don’t fully understand why the environment is dying around us, but yet we buy the instruments that cause the change. “According to the article, The Decline of Neatness, if society is breaking down, as it often appears to be, it is not because we lack the brainpower to meet its demands but because our feelings are so dulled that we don’t recognize we have a problem.” The world in general has a problem realizing that the reason for the decline of the environment is because of us; we don’t want to be the cause of our world ending. People should make a decision to be more aware of their environment and the health of others.

With our thoughtless attitude to nature and the decline of Neatness in how we dress, speak and relate to others, human beings are the main causes of global warming.
Global warming is when the earths temperature rises. It happens when greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane) trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature. This hurts many people, animals, and plants, where many cannot take the change causing them to die (Time for Change 3). It took more than 20 years to broadly accept that mankind is causing global warming with the emission of green house gases. The drastic increase in the emission of carbon dioxide within the last 30years caused by burning fossil fuels has been identified as the major reason for the change of temperature in the atmosphere. More than 80% of the world wide energy demand is currently supplied by the fossil fuels coal, oil or gas. It will be impossible to find alternative sources, which could replace fossil fuels in the short or medium term. The energy demand is simply too high. Every one must make a personal decision whether they want to be the cause of global warming (Time for Change 2). It is in our own interest to induce fundamental changes in our attitude and behavior towards nature: modesty and humility, admiration and respect for all life on earth instead of arrogance and haughtiness (Time for change 3).

The use of Green Power electricity is a very good way to help stop the major harm that is being done to the earth and also try to stop or even reduce the effects of global warming. Green Power is electricity generated from environmentally preferable, renewable resources such as: solar, wind, geothermal, low impact bio mass and high impact hydro resources. According to the EPA many organizations today are encouraged to purchase green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity use. In the world today people have to make important decisions on many things and one major decision is being able to live in a clean, green and safe environment.

Can people with bad manners, speaking in a foul language or bad vocabulary, dress style and bad relationships be the cause of how the earth is being treated? Or can it be apart of nature. As stated on the article “The Decline of Neatness,” many people don’t look or speak in a professional way. As mentioned in class people like this might be one of the causes to how people are treating the earth. Some people can care less about helping the earth and those who don’t, don’t appreciate nature. These people don’t care about recycling, the pollution nor about their health because their health has a lot to do with the air we breathe. Also in the article “Time for Change,” there’s a broader view of how people are the core of the earth. The question mentioned in the article “What drives us human beings?” and “What is our purpose on earth tells us how bad the earth needs our help today. What drives us human beings well, everyone has a different answer but for the most part it is the dream of having it all. For example a home, food, health, money, and the material things. Our purpose on earth, everyone has their purpose, for example helping others in need, religion purposes, family, etc. No matter what it is right now human beings are having a purpose, that purpose is global warming. Right now the earth is asking for our help and we have to do our part since we are doing the harm. The cause of global warming is because of various chemicals such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, etc., sent into the air. All of this is causing the change in temperatures and hurricanes such as hurricane Katrina which struck in New Orleans. The rise of sea levels, the consumption of electricity, water, oil, and much more are making a difference because people need to start making decisions that help our environment.
