Profile Information

About Me:
I am originally from Florida. I have been living in the DC Metro area for several years now. I attend the diverse University of the District of Columbia, in the nation's capitol, and am studying Biology with a concentration in Chemistry. My future plans include attending Medical school and eventually becoming a doctor. I have been a recycler since the age of sixteen, but have become more avid and extreme as I have gotten older. I absolutely adore Polar bears, tigers, and elephants; they are truly beautiful creatures.
My major Biology deals with the study of life and life processes. Specifically, how various factors affect life on earth: from individual cells to much larger organisms and communities. Life on earth is being negatively impacted due to an increase of pollution and solid waste, increase in climate temperatures, and the melting of polar ice caps. With science we are able to calculate probable outcomes for our planet if human behavior remains as it is or if it changes. There is no way we can stand idly by and expect our conditions on earth to improve miraculously.
I believe it is the responsibility of powerful nations, governments, and corporate conglomerates to set the stage and take a stand on pressing environmental issues. If the rules are not changed and laws are not enforced things will progressively become worse. It is no longer a question of “IF”, but “WHEN” we will reach the point of no return.
Do not think things happen by coincidence such as: hurricanes, tornados, wild fires, tsunamis, earthquakes, depletion of the ozone and animals going extinct. They are all adverse effects of our careless and at times unnecessary behavior. Unless we act drastically to reduce global warming and pollution life on earth may become EXTINCT.

Untitled
I was once the envy of the universe
A sight to behold
magnifience that could not be defined
worth more than my weight in gold

Colors so vibrant
sky pristine and clear
royal and calm my colors of blue
greens of emerald
natural true
nutrients abundant
forthcoming was I
never once mistrusting
never did I deny

My children were many
exceptional
unique
my beauty could not sustain them
it was not for keeps
they plundered
& took
& used
I will give no more
I am withered
worn
a mother
scorned

I will teach them
so they never forget
to exploit me
disasterous!
misuse
detriment!
I will not tolerate
no longer will I be still

For I know what to do
heed my words
or overlook
I have only begun

They must know
to love
respect me
be loyal
true
for this is only the beginning,
the end,
I have much more to do.

Challenge Yourself

I think its wonderful that we all, students of Dr. Irvin and dwellers of this earth, have stepped up to his challenge of making people more aware of environmental issues; especially the student body of UDC. But his challenge should not be our end point; we must go further. Everyday we must make a conscience effort to evaluate and execute better living habits as well as better environmental habits. We as responsible adults who must know that for every action there is a reaction, if we make the at… Continue

The Story of Stuff

The "Story of Stuff" is an eye opener. I find it interesting that like so many other aspects in our society a SYSTEM was created for us to follow and we do so easily and blindly; like sheep. I thought that my recycling was helping; it is to an extent, but more needs to be done and on a higher level.
The concept of out of sight out of mind rings true. We as a nation were only concerned with child labor laws when factories on our soil were employing and exploiting young children; maybe we should m… Continue

Compare and Contrast Images

When I first began watching the video I felt at complete ease. The images and music showed earth in her natural state: at peace. She looked so innocent and pure just as humans once were. Then the images and music changed and my feeling changed abruptly. I no longer felt as ease. I felt as if there were an internal conflict that needed to be resolved. The video shows how we have destroyed and continue to destroy our home in the name of progress. We poison her lakes, oceans, animals, and sky for w… Continue

Untitled
I drive down the street
big trucks & cars shoot exhaust at me
discarded bottles, cans and paper
tossed and forgotten
I dont do anything
most times I pretend not to see
I go to the store
plastic is a must
when I get home I turn everything on
lights tv
the weather person says "the high for today ws 93"
but its the middle of january
last july it snowed
wonder if thats normal
A commercial says "the raifforest are disappearing and animals are going extinct"
"you can make a difference"
I tune out, pretend not to hear
sometimes i forget
other times just dont care
by the time things are really bad I'll be gone

Hello Elissa,

Your video on Polar bears was very informative. There is a link on my page to a project we did last semester regarding animals and global warming that you may find interesting. I look forward to reading your Earth Day poem!

You should add many more pictures to your site to go along with the great music you have selected.
