As sea levels rise, the Everglades are going under.
As a result of global warming the Florida Everglades are under siege and will soon be under water. Situated south of Orlando on the Kissimee River and emptying into the Lake Okeechobee, the Everglades supports one of the most varied ecosystems in the world, including many endangered species. It’s also constantly changing, due to alternating periods of flooding and drought.
Unfortunately, its next change will likely be its last. Low-lying coastal areas like the Everglades are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change; as sea levels rise, ocean encroaches upon lowlands, and the lowlands suffer irreparable damage. And the next 100 years will see the seas rising by 2 to 3 feet on average – enough to drown out the Everglades entirely, and all the flora and fauna that make it so unique.
