The Native Plant Project on the Los Angeles City River

Earth Day Network enables people from a variety of backgrounds to come together to connect with our community of advocates, organizations, and individuals. Today, we received news of big impacts people are making in their local community.

The Village Gardeners of the Los Angeles City River is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that is making huge strides for their neighborhood. The group focuses on restoring and enhancing the LA River banks’ deteriorating plant life, excessive erosion, and lack of maintenance.

With our support, the support of the community, and nearly 200 volunteers, they were able to plant 400 California-native plants along the LA River. The Native Plant Project is the largest they have ever implemented! The group also works in the Richard Lillard Outdoor Classroom, connecting students (and their parents!) with their local ecology. Working with a new generation of activists and environmentalists, the Village Gardeners are truly helping to inspire a Green Generation, along with the Los Angeles public, to get involved in individual and collective activities to improve their health, to improve their education, and to solve community issues.

The group is constantly organizing events with local schools and community members. For updates on their amazing work, check out their blog. Or head over to The Village Gardeners' website for information on how to get involved!
