How long before litter breaks down?

Have you ever wondered how long it takes trash to break down in the landfill? Recycling is very important but we should also be aware of how much we're consuming: the packaging, the fuel it takes to get to the store and how renewable the resources used to make it are.

I bought the most adorable reusable (locally distributed) water jug to lug around campus and the gym. I noticed that every day I used a plastic container for 30 minutes at the most and that same bottle will sit in a landfill perhaps longer than my grandchildren will be alive! I am certain this is a change you can get behind. Carrying your own water bottle everyday has saved me $10 a week - that is about $520 dollars a year!
