Earth Day

I'm not sure how, but maybe you could find someway to bring the upcoming presidential election into to Earth Day. Maybe researching each candidates REAL, unmasked, stance on the environment, and throw it together on a flyer, so that students [if old enough] can make an informed decision [or help their parents and family members] on that first Tuesday in November.

And if that's too much work, pawn it off, or rather, "suggest" it to some other politically/ socially motivated group on campus [say, Key Club, Red Cross, League of Politicans, Gay-Straight Alliance, etc.] You'd be surprised to see how willing people are if you put the ideas in their head.

Ask your teachers and friends what they would like to see on Earth Day. You might get some of the best ideas there.

Questions? Concerns? Comments? Feel free to respond.

Salma, If you want to do something on the presidential election for ED, then see if maybe you can get a few of your friends, either from LEAP or not from leap to help you with it. I'm willing to help you as well, but at the moment between the clean up day I'm planning and school work, I just don't have time to lead it.

Every year, we have tables that different groups and clubs use as "booths" and set up projects and presentations they are working on. If you'd like, I'll talk to Christine about letting you have your own booth, because I know you sent an email about the HotSeat project and Kleenex=Kleercut, so if you'd like you can (with help) maybe make posters to show people your information.

I have a question. Umm...I'm kind of concerned that people won't really care much about Earth Day and just be indifferent, like always. I was wondering if there's a way to grab their attention. Do you know any ways that we could get people more...interested and concerned about the environment?

Most people do not care about anything but themselves, so you have to find a way to make this issue accessible to them. Make it easy for people to care. Find out how many acres, oxygen, and water can be saved with $.50 donation, a minute of their time, a recycled bottle of water, or, in terms of Earth Day, an open mind. That is the point of it all. Its a lot easier to effect change if there are people out there with open minds ready to understand the sacrifices that have to be. However, you must also remind others that sometimes, in fact, most of the time, having an open mind is not enough. You have to demand some kind of action, but in a nice, encouraging way.

And please DO NOT be intimidated by this entire spiel. I can go on and on sometimes and I'm sorry if that has served to frighten you in some way. And regardless, you shouldn't bee intimidated... you're not even an officer, but you've still taken the initiative to reply to my post and you're a FRESHMAN!!! {Mr. Levenberg... I see leadership potential, DON'T SCARE HER AWAY!)

So just follow your instincts and if you ever have any questions, ask Mr. L, Ms. W, me, or the other execs. REMEMBER, You Are Not Alone,

The whole problem where people "don't care about earthday" is something that everyone who cares about the environment is trying to figure out. There has to be a way to personally connect these problems to people, and that link just hasn't been found yet.

One of the things I am trying to do with the clean up day I am planning is to show people that it effects them when they don't throw things away, and I want to make a point that there "isn't always going to be someone to pick up after them".

In the past, a lot of people have viewed Earthday as "a way to cut class w/o getting in trouble" and it is difficult to get them to care, but I personally am going to try as hard as I can. Maybe if you can influence them to do something easy, you can still do at least some good.

If you ever have any ideas or questions, you can always ask me as well, it might take me a little while to respond, but if you send me an email to nolalld@yahoo.com, i'll respond asap.
