Many places are or have banned the use or production of plastic bags for example;
Jan. 2008 China's cabinet recently issued a directive banning the production of ultra-thin plastic bags for environmental reasons. The ruling also prohibits shops, supermarkets, and sales outlets nationwide from handing out free plastic bags starting on June 1, 2008.
San Francisco plastic bag ban went into effect November 2007
London England has banned handing out free plastic bags
There are many other cities, towns, states and even countries that are considering or following suit.
Would you like your town, city, state or country to consider this same action regarding plastic bags?

Yes!!! What can I do to get Florida to either ban the use of plastic bags or at least charge customers a certain amount per bag. I want Floridians to think before they accept every plastic bag that stores try to put their purchases in. I never accept plastic bags and you wouldn't beleive the strange looks I get when I say I have my own bag and pull a canvas one out of my purse!!!

Oops London England has not actually banned handing out free plastic bags - you can get a free plastic bag anywhere - I frequently turn down offers from shopkeepers to have a plastic bag us Britis have to get used to carrying ecologically friendly bags around with us - Ireland (Eire) has banned plastic bags - we have banned smoking in public places which is proving very successful

It would be wonderful to see a ban happen in Los Angeles. So far this has not happened. My local supermarkets offer a alternative bag to the plastic, which you need to purchase. I wish I would see more people with these bags. I use them almost every store I got to even if they offer paper bags. It just isn't necessary to add to the garbage in the world. We already have way more than we can handle.

I to am a Floridian extremely interested in affecting a ban on plastic bags in FL or even just starting in my county. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Hi, read your post. I too agree. I walk into Publix and ask her to not put in in a plastic bag and she did so anyway and I took it out and the cashier threw the bag in the garbage. Go figure, huh? I live in Saint Cloud, and I tell you, it is so incredibly wasteful, so much garbage and the city no longer does any recycling. I feel the bags should just be banned and people should be educated and learn how to think a tad bit more when it comes to issues like these. Now I am shopping 25 miles away at Whole Foods up in Orlando instead of the Publix which is just 5 miles down the road. Sad, huh? Maybe someday we will get a Whole Foods here.

Okay Floridians, I can go one better for you. I take my canvas bag into Publix and they still try to stick my groceries in a plastic bag to put in the canvas bag, and then argue with me that they have to do it. So I let them then stand right there and make the whole line wait for me to unbag my groceries and give them their plastic bags back, while asking them why they bother to sell the canvas bags when the very point of them is not to use plastic. Of course, they sit there with that blank expression on their faces because the just don't get it.

I would to get involved with some type of ban on plastic bags. I don't know how to do it, but I will start researching and see what I can come up with. If nothing else, perhaps some letters to Publix and other prominent businesses may be in order. I'll let you know what I find.

Another thing that really bothers me is styrofoam. I don't have to tell you eco-conscious people why. We have a local health food store that has a deli area with all natural, organic, healthy foods and you serve yourself up in a nice styrofoam container. Aauuggghhh. Hello? Can I have mine without the poison box please?
