We’re all in this together!

Hi I am Milou,
I am a 9 year old student from Buenos Aires. Did you know that the 21st of March 2008 is
World Poetry Day? I want to share this blog with students, kids and poets, writers and artists from all over the world to post a contribution for Earth Day. It would be great if you could join me and post here a link that connects to a relevant poem, text/article, picture/art with environmental content on your web site for Earth Day. Please put a back link on your site to World Poetry Day to get it rolling. If you don't have a web site you can post your contribution here.
Thanks, Milou

No matter who and where you are
You can always follow your dreaming star
And don’t listen to others thoughts ‘n’ founds
What you think is the thing that counts

If you feel like being a hip hop singer
Even though you’re basketball flinger
Have fun while you play
And sing still today
Do it with fun and don’t linger

I Am Of The Earth by Anna Lee Walters

I am of the earth
She is my mother
She bore me with pride
She reared me with love
She cradled me each evening
She pushed the wind to make it sing
She built me a house of harmonious colors
She fed me the fruits of her fields
She rewarded me with memories of her smiles
She punished me with the passing of time
And at last when I long to leave
She will embrace me for eternity.

Anna Lee Walters
b. 1946

I remember asking (in my head) what was life for, why did anyone (or anything) live, and why did I live. At that point death to me was a word that represented very little fear. I had seen things die, animals and such, and I heard of people dying and saw evidence of it. I remember thinking that from what I could tell or see, there were only two things that were "real", and the wonder of both: life and death.

What earthday means to me... - Haiku by Milou

It makes me ashamed
'Cause of crime and destruction
Mother Earth suffers

But one day a year
We help animals and care
Since nature is rare

If we care for earth
We'll have a healthy nature
Like on nature's birth

I wish that our world
Our life, our space, our nature
Were one unity

Happy Earthday,
Milou

The Colors of the World by Ria Coleto-Cervantes

I see the sky
And it's all blue,
Like the ocean with its azure hue.

I see the trees
And it's all green
With the verdant leaves on the brim.

I see the sun
And how it glowed!
Like a golden ring on a distant slope.

I see a land
With the warm shades of brown,
Which echoes warmth all around.

And I see folks like you and me.
We are part of this mystery.
The colors are rich with variety
Of people, plants, animals and nature's elements in a mould.
For these are the colors of the world.

I have written this poem as tribute to our Mother Earth. Let's support all organizations and causes fighting for the protection of the world we live in.

Thanks.

MOTHER EARTH by Ponder Awhile

Mother Earth actually looks after me,
She neither expects nor charges a fee.

Every year fresh fruits she provides to eat,
For those fruits, one another man will beat.

So much water is there for us all,
For water it often becomes an ugly brawl.

A tiny insect on her I am,
Feeding me with her assorted jam.

Man keeps beating her with his big bombs,
When will he realize that she is alive
and that it is wrong?

Her we must begin to appreciate,
Immediately before it gets too late.

From our puny race she will defend herself,
You are just begging her to annihilate yourself.

Buenos Aires shrouded in smoke - I have no words -Milou

Pall of smoke hangs over Buenos Aires
Malaysia Sun
Friday 18th April, 2008

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, has been smothered in a thick blanket of smoke caused by brush fires.

The smoke has caused health problems with residents complaining of asthma and skin and eye irritations.

Traffic has been stopped and aircraft have been told to divert to other airports.

The fires have been caused by farmers who have deliberately set fire to scrub, to clear it for pasture.

Around 700 square kilometres of scrubland is burning and firefighters and water bombing planes are battling the flames.

Firefighters have detected more than 300 fires so far.

The smoke has now spread to the Uruguayan capital Montevideo, 223 kilometres east of Buenos Aires over the La Plata river.

This satellite image shows the clouds of smoke that were heading towards Buenos Aires on Wednesday. The problem has now drifted to neighbouring Uruguay, with smoke hanging over Montevideo. (BBC)

Fire Haze Shrouds Argentine Capital
BUENOS AIRES, April 17 -- The Argentine capital has been veiled in a malodorous fog this week, as smoke spreads from massive grass fires centered in a neighboring rural province.

Poor visibility grounded flights at the city's domestic airport, temporarily shut down its main seaport and closed two major roadways Thursday morning. The smoke was also blamed for two multi-vehicle crashes that killed eight people in the past week on a local highway.

The 270-square-mile blaze is centered near the delta of the Parana River, which separates the provinces of Entre Rios and Buenos Aires. Government officials said Thursday they believe it was deliberately set by farmers trying to clear land for new fields.

"In this case, agricultural producers have demonstrated great disregard for the community, showing an irrationality and irresponsibility that is truly alarming," Interior Minister Florencio Randazzo said in a televised news conference.

The Argentine government is engaged in a bitter dispute with the country's farmers over a recent hike in export taxes on agricultural products, including soybeans. The dispute led to production strikes that caused shortages of some products here, but the farmers and the government recently called a temporary truce to try to solve the problems.

Ulises Forte, the vice president of the Argentine Agrarian Federation, accused the government of using the fires against the farmers for political purposes, according to the state news service.

I have no words,
Milou
